In the middle of October, 1778, Major Christopher Carleton was tasked with invading the Vermont region to destroy homes, barns, crops, mills and capture people thought to be sympathetic to the American cause. On the 31st of October 1778 Major Carleton’s men captured the first men in their raid into Vermont. One of them was none other than Daniel McIntosh who had boarded the Vermont militia men on the way to Peirson’s farm. Also Odel Squire and his son captured. They had aided the militia after the battle at Peirson’s farm. Some of the militia that were captured in the raid were Timothy Bishop and his brother and father, Nathanial Griswold and his two brothers. They would be taken to Fort St. John then on to Quebec.
Moses Peirsons sons, Uzal and Ziba were captured earlier and taken to Fort Chambly where they later escaped in the spring and made their way back to Shelburne then on to their parents staying in Shoreham. Moses Peirson’s daughter, Sarah and her husband, Isaac Van Arnum and young son Miles were captured and taken to Quebec for the duration of the war.
