A Walk around the Zocalo

12 Dec

What a great trip with my cousin Richard to Mexico City. We stayed in a hotel on the Zocala (Old Square) with the Cathedral built over the the former Aztec sacred Templo Mayor on the north side of the square. On the east side of the square is the Government Palace where many of the government departments as well as the President’s residence are located.

Behind the Cathedral about 1 block is the street where Willis J. Powell had his store called La Buena-fe which meant “The good will or good faith.” We couldn’t locate the exact store but the buildings on that street date back to Willis’s time.

We could see the balcony that Willis used to observe the troops leaving for Texas to fight at the Alamo.

One of the areas that Willis did not see was the excavation that they have done to unearth the Temple Mayor. This was an amazing complex that the Aztecs had developed. Apparently the top of the Temple Mayor was as high as the steeple on the Cathedral next door. Much of the stone in the Cathedral and square are from the Temple Mayor.
